About the area

Wells is the smallest city in England (population about 11,000) lying in beautiful countryside between the Somerset Levels and the Mendip Hills – an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Wells medieval centre has local markets twice a week, good restaurants, a thriving high street and many important ancient buildings, including the Cathedral and moated Bishops Palace and gardens. There are four major supermarkets on the edge of the city. Wells Leisure Centre has the usual facilities of gym and swimming pool to add to Wells Rugby Club, Tennis club, Bowling club and Golf course. Throughout the year Wells hosts festivals for Music, Literature, Art and Food, and has twinned links with Burgundy, the Rhineland and Northern Italy. There are many societies and clubs for those who would like to join a diverse social community.

The major towns of the area, Bristol, Bath, Taunton and Yeovil are all within commuting distance. There are excellent state & independent schools in the area which include several good primary schools, Wells Blue School, Strode College, Wells Cathedral School, Downside, All Hallows and Millfield.

Wells is a transport hub for bus services, including daily services to London. Main line trains run from Castle Cary and Bristol International Airport is 35 minutes drive away.

Westbury-sub-Mendip is a village with a population of about 800, situated on the southern slopes of the Mendip Hills, half-way between Wells and the world-famous Cheddar Gorge.

The village has a good community with many societies and organisations, a pub, village stores and post office and not least an excellent primary school (for seniors it is within the Blue School catchment area). In addition the village is on the Wells Cathedral School bus route.

Quarry House stands on the eastern approach to the village in gently elevated position with breathtaking views from all levels. The house is well back from the roadway and is a handsome, striking and most impressive building with beautiful stone elevations under a weathered tiled roof.

The design of the structure is exceptional and inspiring being strongly influenced by Saxon architecture with post and cruck framing with oak timbers. It has well insulated walls with stone facing and the depth of the walls has a great beneficial impact on creating its character. Other architectural details include the staircases, timber floors, matching solid doors and the overhang of the roof which beautifully deflects the sunlight. Indeed as the house matures and settles into its landscape it will be very difficult to determine its origin and undoubtedly will be an exceptional period house of the future.

From the entrance drive a short flight of steps leads to a paved stone terrace with small shallow ponds designed to reflect the sunlight.

The main entrance door leads into a large reception hall with a tiled floor, oak posts and a fireplace with wood burning stove. This is a large room with doors leading off and the focal point being the twin staircases leading to the first floor.

Remaining on the ground floor the accommodation here includes a bathroom, and two bedrooms each about the size of a small apartment and each being suited to other uses if required. Both rooms have en suite shower rooms. One has a conventional large walk in shower and the other has a marble tiled floor and a large shower area with peacock coloured wall tiles and two showerheads.

There are two other rooms on this floor. The boot room is an ideal store and contains the heat recovery system. The pantry or wine cellar has a spiral staircase which discretely leads to the kitchen.

The twin stairs meet on a half landing lit by velux rooflights and then lead to the first floor living area which prompts an image of the great hall of a Saxon manor house with greenoak posts, beams and rafters and a vaulted ceiling. This living area is 40ft long with hardwood double glazed windows the entire length and part of the east wall. These windows are an amazing feature and give unparalleled panoramic views over the rolling countryside.

Within the room the timber floor has a herringbone design with a free standing Scandinavian wood burning stove at one end and an open fireplace at the other. There's also a door to the garden.

To the side of the room is the kitchen with bespoke solid painted timber wall and island units and marble and polished concrete worktops. There's a 4 oven cream electric Aga and integrated appliances include a dishwasher, fridge and freezer.

On the west side of the living area is a hallway which serves a cloakroom, a bedroom with an en suite bathroom and a further bedroom which again can be used for any purpose such as a study, snug, etc.

A staircase leads from this hall to the second floor where there are two further bedrooms and a bathroom.

Outside the landscaping has created a graveled drive and parking areas, lawns, flower and shrub beds and the ornamental ponds and water feature. In addition there is a footpath access from the rear garden into the village. The grounds are about half an acre and can be left in a simple format or further developed. Either will be appropriate to this fabulous property. NB Garage foundations are in place.

From Wells follow the A371 towards Cheddar and on reaching the village of Westbury Sub Mendip, Quarry House is on the right hand side.
