About the area
Pilton is a pretty and sought after Somerset village in beautiful countryside near Wells, Glastonbury and Shepton Mallet. The major towns of the area being Bristol, Bath, Taunton and Yeovil are all within commuting distance and there are excellent road networks to London and the South.
Castle Cary is the nearest train station with fast links to London.
Wells, the smallest city in England, nestles close to the Mendip Hills – an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty-has excellent local markets twice a week and many medieval buildings including the Cathedral and moated Bishops Palace.
Nearby, Glastonbury grew up alongside the Abbey and is a thriving major tourist area.
Shepton Mallet is another historic town which is now rapidly growing and all three towns offer a wide range of facilities, societies and activities covering cultural, social and sporting aspects. There are many local shooting syndicates nearby and hunting with the Blackmoor Vale and Mendip Farmers.
Education is well covered with excellent state & independent schools in the area including many village primary schools, Crispins, St Dunstans, Strode College, Wells Cathedral School, Millfield, Downside, All Hallows and the Bruton schools. Pilton itself has a church, village pub, village hall, a very active and friendly community and is an exceptionally popular residential area.
It's also noteworthy the owners have enjoyed the free tickets for Glastonbury Festival by virtue of living in the village.
Dating back to 1740 Bowermead House enjoys the space, character and charm which make period properties such as this so desirable as family homes. The main entrance is now on the western elevation and immediately to the left is the drawing room. This is a splendid well proportioned 26ft room with a large bay window (views of Glastonbury Tor), a vaulted ceiling and a fireplace with a wood burner. A short flight of steps leads to the inner hall and a cloakroom. Opening off the hall is the dining room and across the hall is the sitting room. This is a gorgeous room with large windows with deep oak sills, an ornate fireplace fitted with a Jetmaster.
The lovely family kitchen/breakfast room is a large, double aspect room with plenty of space for the breakfast table and chairs and french doors to the garden. In the kitchen area are an oil fired Aga, a free standing electric cooker, a good range of stained pine and painted fitted unit and a sink set into a granite work surface with plumbing for the dishwasher below. There's also a very useful pantry.
Leading off the kitchen is a utility/boot room which leads to the rear hall and a back door.
The stairs lead up to the first floor landing which gives access to the bedrooms and bathrooms. The rooms are all very well proportioned with one being a single. The main bedroom has an en suite with bath/shower above, basin, wc and plenty of fitted cupboards. Two further large doubles both have plenty of storage and access to the family bathroom. The fifth bedroom is also a double and has a steps down to an en suite with bath, basin and wc as well as a door to the back stairs which leads down to the utility room.
The house is complemented by its well planted and maintained gardens with mature trees, shrubberies, lawns, herbaceous borders, terraces, paved and gravelled pathways. As well as the lovely gardens and land there is a large double garage and stabling. The garage has planning to convert to a single story dwelling and is already fitted with a shower and a bio digester. The stables are currently configured as 4 loose boxes but have been designed so they can easily be converted to garage space if the existing garage is converted to a dwelling.
In conclusion Bowermead House offers a fantastic opportunity to purchase a substantial family home with plenty of outdoor space and scope to extend and all set in a wonderful location.
