There is parking, a garage and a pretty walled garden.

About the area

Evercreech is pleasantly situated in beautiful countryside away from but within easy reach of major roads. It is a lively village with a good range of amenities including a fine church, primary school, surgery, pharmacy, pub, store & post office, community art studio, hairdressers and bakery. A wide range of social, sporting and cultural organisations reflects its thriving community spirit. The facilities and attractions of the nearby towns of Bruton, Castle Cary, Wells and Glastonbury including The Newt and Hauser and Wirth Gallery are all within a short drive. All major supermarkets including Waitrose in Wells are easily accessible at Shepton Mallet, Wells and Wincanton.

Bath, Bristol and Yeovil are within commuting distance and the A303 is a few miles south via the A37. Within 5 miles at Castle Cary is a main line station to London Paddington (100 minutes). There are many excellent state and independent schools nearby including Ansford, Sexey’s, King’s Bruton, Wells Cathedral School, Downside and Millfield.

Accommodation

Evercreech House forms the major part of a large country house which was built in the 18th century by William Rodbard, Sheriff of Somerset. The building has earlier origins and now stands with distinctive elevations, typical of the Georgian era. Such is its prominence, it was noted in Sir Nikolaus Pevsner’s ‘The Buildings of England’ where its striking design ”with three canted bays, each with a simply treated venetian window” is described. Further noteworthy details can be enjoyed internally where in the grand galleried reception hall there is magnificent carved woodwork, columns, balustrades and a fireplace, having been designed and remodelled in the 19th century by Sir T. G. Jackson, known as Oxford Jackson because of his extensive work in that city. Very few properties feature a hall of such a character. In addition to this there are sash windows with working shutters, high ornate ceilings, dado rails, cornicing and timber floorboards throughout.

*

The property is entered through the main front door from the courtyard and parking area which leads into an entrance vestibule where there is ample room to take off and hang coats and a cloakroom leading off. To the left-hand side of the entrance is the Victorian reception hall which is the heart of the house. The main living rooms and bedrooms lie to the rear of the property and have lovely garden views from tall sash windows. The kitchen breakfast room benefits from an excellent array of bespoke fitted units with granite worktops and a two-oven gas Aga with an electric side hob. There are further integral appliances including a fridge, freezer and dishwasher. There is an island providing additional storage and work surfaces and, away from the units, there is room for a breakfast table within the bay by the french doors that lead out to the garden.

**

Adjoining the kitchen there is an elegant dining room with full height windows and french doors opening onto the garden as well as a fireplace with marble surround and black slate hearth. The sitting room is another splendid living room which is full of charm. Within the room there is a centrally located working Portland stone fireplace, with arched alcoves and shelves to either side and storage cupboards beneath. Light floods the room through three tall sash windows looking out to the gardens. The utility room has a butler’s sink, a ‘sheila maid’ laundry airer, a store room and, interesting to note here, a corbel stone of medieval origins evidencing the earlier history of the house.

***

The staircase rises to the first floor where there are four double bedrooms, three of which being exceptionally large with their own en-suite bath/shower rooms. A further, back staircase rises up to the second floor where there is a large office/study, a double bedroom, bathroom and several storerooms. This could easily be used as a nanny or teenager’s annexe with the office becoming a second sitting room.

Outside

At the rear of the property there is a beautifully maintained walled garden which is laid to lawn with stepping stones meandering through. There are mature herbaceous and shrub borders and climbing shrubs cladding the walls which also offer security and excellent privacy throughout. There is a seating terrace immediately outside the kitchen breakfast and dining rooms which is perfect for alfresco dining during the warmer months. Another, west-facing , gravelled seating area is adjacent to the lawn. Away from the house there is a rose and clematis covered arbour which leads to the end of the garden where there is a useful garden shed. There are mature trees offering shade including a landmark cedar and a magnificent acer. Further useful items in the garden include a log and bin store, outside tap and power. A timber gate gives access from the rear terrace and garden to the High Street.

*

At the front of the property there is a south-facing courtyard with climbing shrubs and roses offering a good degree of privacy. A pair of wrought iron gates access the drive. There is a single garage with a powered up and over door and parking.
