Location

Shepton Mallet is a small historic town which stands between Wells and Frome and has good access northwards to Bristol and south to Castle Cary rail station and the A303 road to London.

Description

The Barn is currently undergoing conversion by a highly reputable firm of local builders, well regarded as craftsmen, with the quality of the work evident upon viwing. The works are progressing on schedule and and the home will shortly be ready for occupation. Meanwhile buyers have the opportunity to put their own stamp on the property with their choice of certain fixtures and decoration. The conversion has been designed by the respected Wells Architects, Collier Reading, and the accommodation will total about 2,285 sq.ft. This includes the main living area which is also the most striking feature of the building – with full height hardwood framed windows and bi folding doors on the south and west elevations which flood the building with sunshine. The room incorporates the kitchen, the dining room and a living room. Simply a breath taking room !

***

The remainder of the accommodation is also impressive. The hall leads to a large, well proportioned sitting room with big windows and french doors facing west. It also has a fireplace ideal for a wood burning stove. The study has an en suite shower room and is therby equally suitable as a 4th bedroom. Off the kitchen area is a utility room, cloakroom and boiler closet. The staircase in the hall rises to a large galleried landing. The main bedroom is above the sitting room and has large windows and double French doors which open to a balcony again with superb views. The bedroom also has an ensuite shower room. There are two other good bedrooms and family bathroom has a basin WC and bath.

Outside

The design provides a private drive to lead of the road and then approach the house northwards providing a fine and impressive view of the building. The grounds total about half an acre and are being landscaped.

About the area

Shepton Mallet is an historic market town with the usual features and also benefits from a Mulberry Store and Kilver Court being a major designer outlet. The thriving Cathedral City of Wells, about 5 miles away, with its many concerts and cultural events also provides a wide range of amenities. The small but increasingly well known town of Bruton is also just a short drive away. This part of Somerset with the Mendip Hills to the north, Wells to the west and Frome to the east provides some truly hidden treasures within its undulating countryside. Communications in the area have improved significantly with the upgrading of the A303 to a dual carriageway the majority of the way to the M3 and London. The A37 leads to Bristol and Bath whilst Bristol International airport is about 20 miles to the northwest. Of particular note is the mainline railway station at Castle Cary (Paddington about 100 minutes).

****

There are excellent schools for children of all ages within easy motoring distance including Millfield, the Blue School at Wells, Whitstone, Wells Cathedral School, Downside, All Hallows and Strode College at Street. The area is well provided for with bridleways, quiet lanes and footpaths suitable for all outdoor enthusiasts. Golf is available at nearby Mendip Springs, Farrington Gurney and Wells. Racing at Wincanton, Salisbury, Bath and Taunton. Leisure centres at Shepton Mallet and Wells.

Directions

From Wells take the A271 to Shepton Mallet. Enter Shepton Mallet and at the first roundabout turn left. Pass under the viaduct and a short distance beyond this road joins the A37. Turn left onto the A37 and continue northwards up the hill. South View Barn is about 250 yards further along on the left hand side.
