Description. Farmhouse & Barn
Redland Farmhouse dates from at least the 18th century but it’s very likely it was built much earlier. It’s referred to in 17th century maps and the house features a mansard roof which is an indication of Dutch architectural influence. Dutch engineers came to Somerset in the fifteenth century to drain the Somerset Levels. Their influence can be seen in Langport which has many mansard roofs.
Swallow Barn is a detached building standing just to the north west of the house
This is a handsome building built of local lias stone under a clay pantiled mansard roof with sash windows. Grade ll listed it has bags of character and many period features. These include flagstones, fireplaces, curtain rails, sash windows, shutters and beams. These are complemented by plenty of bathrooms and LPG central heating.
The entrance hall is on the eastern side of the house and leads to a hall with a staircase. A door leads from the hall into the comfortable sitting room with a large stone inglenook fireplace with a woodburning stove. This room has doors to a small study, and two fine reception rooms being the drawing room and dining room with both having fireplaces.
The kitchen and breakfast room is a good size being over 23 ft and has fitted units, a Belfast sink and a Rangecooker. Off the kitchen are a utility room and a cloakroom
On the first floor are three bedrooms and a bathroom. The largest bedroom on the south east side has an en suite shower room
On the second floor is a bedroom which leads through another room with another en suite shower room.
The oak framed garage block has 2 open fronted garages and a workshop with power and water connection. It stands in a lawned garden which surrounds the house. There are existing mature hedges and further laurels have recently been planted. An interesting detail is the water well and pump.
Redland Farmhouse is Grade ll listed.
