Meare lies about midway between the historic town of Glastonbury and the popular village of Wedmore. There is easy access to the other towns of the area including Wells and Street whilst Bristol is well within commuting distance. Meareway is a small and very quiet country lane which runs from Meare to the other nearby small village of Westhay. Long Cottage stands alongside the lane and has fine views over the open countryside to both sides and northwards to the Mendip Hills.

Long Cottage is an exceptional home which is presented to a high standard. It’s extremely comfortable with double glazing and oil central heating and has been extensively renovated in recent years. The main living rooms all have a double aspect which makes the house light and airy. Entrance is from a stable door into a hall and to the right is a snug having a fireplace with a multi fuel stove, side alcoves and a French door to the garden. To the left of the hall is the 21 ft. sitting room with a decorative (not working) fireplace. At the end of the sitting room as a door to an inner hall off which is the cloakroom (handbasin and WC) and utility room with the boiler, worksurface and space and plumbing for a washing machine.

At the end of the hall a door opens into the extremely well fitted kitchen which has an open plan dining room. The kitchen has a dual aspect as does the dining room which also has French doors, large windows and a lantern roof all of which combine to flood this much used living area with sunshine. In addition the room has underfloor heating, a range of bespoke wall and base units and solid oak worktops. In the centre of the room is an island unit with storage, a breakfast bar and an oak worktop. Integrated appliances include an oven, induction hob, fridge freezer, microwave, and dishwasher. The dining area has a lantern roof and double doors to a well sheltered and screened terrace

First Floor

On the first floor there are 3 bedrooms leading off from the landing, all of which enjoy splendid views. The dual aspect master bedroom has large glass french doors with glass Juliet balcony to take full advantage of the views. There are fitted wardrobes with hanging space and shelves. The en suite has been fitted to a very high standard with floor to ceiling tiling, double size shower enclosure, wall hung vanity unit, wc and heated towel rail. Bedroom 2 is dual aspect with fitted wardrobe. Bedroom 3 has views to the rear. The family bathroom has been fitted to a high standard with shower cubicle, bath with shower attachment, wc and painted vanity unit . Walls are finished with attractive painted tongue and grooved panelling.

Whilst the front door opens from the lane a much used entrance is through the enclosed terrace garden next to the dining room. Close by is a parking area and the adjacent carport and forecourt. In addition there is a long gravelled parking area and store. On the other side of the cottage and approached from the snug is a charming mature garden with lawns, shrubs, flower beds and indeed total privacy.

Long Cottage is a delightful home and inspection is essential to fully appreciate its qualities.

From Wedmore follow the signs to Glastonbury. After about 3 miles turn left after the Bird in the Hand Public House. Long Cottage can be found 1 mile on the right. From Glastonbury enter the village of Meare, continue until Mearway is on the rigt hand side and follow this lane until Long Cottage is on the left hand side.

About the area

The Saxon village of Wedmore is a delightful and extremely active centre and in many ways is an archetype of an English village. There are historic buildings including the medieval church next to an old coaching inn, a general store/newsagent, post office, butchers, chemist, various other interesting shops, plus pubs, restaurants and tea rooms. There is a wide range of cultural and sporting clubs and societies. Swimming pools at both Cheddar & Wells; Sailing & Windsurfing Clubs at Cheddar Reservoir; the Badgworth Equestrian Centre: Wedmore 18 Hole Golf Course; Floodlit Astroturf Tennis Courts; Indoor and Outdoor Bowling Green;, Football and Cricket clubs.

Glastonbury's past and its present are linked with its dominant landmark and the town grew up alongside the Abbey and become a manufacturing and trading centre. Today it’s a thriving market town and a major tourist venue, welcoming thousands of visitors each year. Medieval Glastonbury - designated a conservation area - clusters around the evocative ruins of the Abbey. Meare is a village and civil parish 3 miles north-west of Glastonbury and has been a settled site for even longer than Glastonbury. The parish Church of St Mary, formerly in the keeping of Glastonbury Abbey dates from 1323 and is a Grade I listed building. The village also has a primary school awarded ‘outstanding’ by OFSTED, a number of societies and clubs and a good community spirit.

Close by is the Shapwick Heath nature reserve with superb walks enjoying the abundant wildlife in the area including the fabulous Starling murmerations in the spring and autumn. Nearby cities and towns and communications The Cathedral City of Wells is approximately 7 miles away and also provides a good range of business, recreational and shopping facilities. Shopping centres are available at Taunton, Bath and Bristol (each approximately 25 miles away). Communications in the area are good with access to the M5 (J22 - 10 minutes) connecting to M4 (J16). A local train service from Highbridge (7 miles) links with the intercity train services at Taunton and Bristol Temple Meads to London Paddington taking approximately 11/2 hours. Castle Cary, a mainline station is about 20 miles whilst Bristol International Airport is 15 miles away. Schools There are excellent state and independent schools in the area for all ages.
