About the area
Baltonsborough is a popular village between Glastonbury and Castle Cary. It has a thriving community with a church, primary school, pub and an excellent shop and cafe.
Glastonbury’s past and present are linked with the dominant landmark of the Tor and dates back into the times of legends. The ruined Medieval Abbey is in the centre of this thriving local town, which is now a major tourist venue. Locals and visitors alike enjoy the variety of shopping that Glastonbury provides.
Castle Cary described by Sir Nikolaus Pevsner the eminent architectural historian, as Somerset’s prettiest town, lies in beautiful unspoilt countryside. The town is characterised by period buildings constructed of the distinctive honey coloured stone for which the area is well known. It remains a delightful small market town with a number of traditional shops and boutiques.
On the outskirts of Castle Cary is the railway station with its direct line to London Paddington and the A303 road link is a few miles south.
Street and Wells are also within a short drive and Bath, Bristol and Taunton are in commuting reach.
In addition to the local primary school in Baltonsborough (Ofsted rated ‘good’ in 2014), there are excellent state and independent schools nearby including St. Dunstans, Strode College, Wells Blue School, Wells Cathedral School, Hazelgrove, the Bruton and Sherborne schools and, of course, Millfield (prep and senior schools).
From the Greyhound pub in the middle of Baltonsborough go southwards along Martin Street for nearly half a mile. The first lane to the left is Lubborn Lane and Orchard End is in the elbow of this junction.
