I have been selling property in Southern Spain, near the coastal town of Nerja, for 10 years and have a house there to escape to whenever I can. Nerja is between Malaga and Granada on the eastern stretch of the Costa Del Sol. This is a very different place from the well known Costa Del Sol of Marbella and Torremolinos. Much less frantic, where people still have time to stop and pass the time of day.
Nerja was originally a sleepy fishing village, which although developed and extended remains unmistakably Andalucian. It has narrow winding streets, restaurants, café bars, shops, and whitewashed houses whose wrought iron terraces overflow with Bouganvilla. The heart of Nerja is its spectacular Balcón de Europa, a magnificent promenade with sweeping panoramic views of the Mediterranean and small coves and beaches below. Just 4 miles inland is the historic whitewashed village of Frigiliana, thought by many to be the prettiest in Andalucia. The 6 mile stretch of coastline from Nerja to La Herradura is also perhaps the best in Spain, being undeveloped and protected with a Natural Park.
One of the greatest attractions of the area is the weather with arguably the best climate in Europe. Summer days are usually around a blissful 27º C and
in the winter sunny, with temperatures of around 20°C. Like the fabled perfect English summers’s day! In January it is not unusual to see people swimming and sunbathing on the beaches.
My family and I frequently swim on Christmas Day!
